Trip prep

Everything worth knowing before you go to Japan. Rules and perks can change, so double-check official sources before you leave.

Mobile data

You'll rely on maps, translation and transit apps in Japan. Pick the option that fits your trip.

eSIM, pocket Wi-Fi, SIM card or roaming

eSIM
Pros
Activates as soon as you scan a QR code. Nothing to carry or return, and you can keep your home number on.
Cons
Only works on eSIM-capable phones. Most plans are data-only, with no Japanese phone number.
Best for
Solo travelers or pairs with recent phones
Pocket Wi-Fi
Pros
One device covers several people plus laptops and tablets. Speeds are fairly stable.
Cons
You have to charge and carry it, it's useless if you split up, and you must pick it up and return it at the airport.
Best for
Families and groups, or people using laptops and tablets
SIM card
Pros
Works on phones without eSIM and tends to be cheap.
Cons
You remove your home SIM, so you can't get texts (like verification codes) on your usual number. The tiny SIM is easy to lose.
Best for
Phones without eSIM, short trips
Roaming
Pros
Just sign up with your carrier and use your own number with no setup. Calls work too.
Cons
Usually the most expensive option.
Best for
People who don't want any setup, or who must take work calls

Good to know

  • Install your eSIM at home before you leave and switch it on when you land. The install QR usually works only once, so don't delete it.
  • Check your phone settings for eSIM support first. Most iPhones from the XS and XR onward support it.
  • For maps and social media, 1–2 GB a day is usually enough. If you stream a lot of video, choose an unlimited plan.
  • Stations, convenience stores and airports have free Wi-Fi, but connecting is fiddly, so it isn't enough as your main connection.
